Algopack®, a natural material

Have been reading about and keeping tabs on the pacific garbage patch, new methods to keep the ocean clean, effects of plastic on the ocean life etc… Day before while reading articles online I came across this very interesting writeup about Algopack® shared by Captain Paul Watson of the SeaShepherd – a viable green alternative to plastic. It is manufactured in France by Algoe

With the price of petrol continuing to rise, Algopack® offers an alternative answer to plastic. Algopack offers a solution for reducing pollution from plastics, on land and in the oceans.
Algopack is capable of producing a rigid material made from 100% based industrial waste from brown seaweeds. For their growth, seaweeds need no fertilizer nor pesticide and they need low amounts of water. They absorb and convert CO2 into sugar for growth and release O2, thus promoting the development of plankton. Seaweeds are not invasive and respect biodiversity.
At the end of the life cycle, the material is fully compostable and becomes a natural fertilizer.

(Read more about it here)

With the effect of the light from the sun’s rays, seaweed transforms CO² into the sugars it needs to grow. At the same time, it releases into the water a large quantity of oxygen.

The process of cultivating seaweed is unquestionably a positive thing for the Marine environment, as it allows CO² to be reduced and concentrated whilst simultaneously making available an energy that is ideal for the growth of plankton. The types of seaweed cultivated by Algopack® come from sources such as aquaculture farms.

Reducing the percentage of petrochemicals by introducing seaweed-based products.

The granules, naturally brown in colour, can be mass-dyed according to projet requirements. You can receive bags of 25kg, Big Bags of 450kg or an Octoben of 450Kg.

Algoblend® represents a 25% energy saving in its production (compared to a polypropylene equivalent).

The Algoblend® granules are compatible with all the extruders on the market : there are no modifications required for your extruding machines, and you can use existing filters.

Any offcuts can be ground up again to be reused in the material.

Purging for cleaning can be freely carried out. The thickness of the sheets is between 300µ and 1000µ.

Algoblend® sheets can be thermoformed without any particular modification to existing thermoforming tools. The material does not change either the impressions or the cutters. The material is also suitable for direct contact with food, and the degrees of permeability can be optimised to suit each particular application.

The material can be adapted to suit the preferred MFI settings. All existing moulds of any type can be used (hot manifold…). The material does not alter the imprint surface.

This material can be imprinted in line with existing processes

Looking forward Algae based products becoming more available and accessible in near future.

An LED Bulb That Lasts 20 Years

A new LED (light-emitting diode) from Philips promises to last 20 years – more than 25 000 hours. The LED light bulb was launched commercially in stores on Earth Day.

For more than one hundred years, Thomas Edison’s incandescent light bulb has been on the market. Though providing excellent light quality, incandescent light bulbs are notorious for low energy efficiency: About 1/10 of the electrical energy that is put into the bulb is actually converted into light – the rest ends up as heat-waste.
Philips Led Bulb 20 Years
Won the Department of Energy Award

The reason why Philips has built the new LED bulbs in the first price was to win the U.S. Department of Energy’s L Price competition. This was an initiative brought on the table by the U.S. DoE to aware people of the incredible inefficient incandescent light bulbs, encouraging them to switch to more energy conserving alternatives.

Philips won the competition back in early August 2011; however, they did not release their prize-winning LED bulbs on the market before a week ago, on April 22.

How Much Does It Cost?

The net price of the new LED from Philips is currently at $60, which is several times greater than what you would have to pay for both an incandescent and a energy-saving light bulb (CLF).

On the other hand, the lifetime is about 25 times as great as incandescent light bulbs, which typically only lives around 1000 hours. The increased energy efficiency of a LED also has to be taken into account.

Estimations show that if the new LED light bulb replaces an incandescent light bulb and is used 4 hours a day, $8 is saved every year in electricity costs. Replace all incandescent in your house with the new LED and the savings increase accordingly. This means that after 7.5 years, the initial cost of the LED is paid down saved in terms of reduced energy costs – with another 12.5 years remaining on the lifetime.

There are still literally a ton of incandescent light bulbs that are in use today. If every 60-watt incandescent was replaced by the new LED, the U.S. would save almost four billion dollars every year. Imagine how much energy is wasted.

Nokero N200 A Green Solution to Light Up Nights Worldover

In a world where 1 in 4 humans lives without access to electricity, and you and I pretty much can’t exist without it an economically viable solution to light up the nights is a blessing, no less. Nokero N200 is a small and effective solution for a large problem! Nokero (No kerosene!) was formed in June 2010 by inventor Steve Katsaros to develop safe and environmentally-friendly solar products that eliminate the need for harmful and polluting fuels used for light and heat around the world and most importantly, are affordable to the communities that need them.

Nokero Introduction

Nokero lamps are an all-in-one solar system that is already completely and successfully replacing kerosene lamps and paraffin candles in places all around the world where  electricity is not a given. Best of all, their lighting products are more economical than any other lights of the same kind.

Nokero performance:

  • A typical kerosene lamp emits about 10 lumens of light, similar to Nokero.
  • Nokero is made in a high-quality factory, has its CE certification, and is built to last 5+years when properly cared for.
  • Nokero’s battery lasts 2-3 years, and is replaceable for about $1 US.
  • Nokero is bulb-shaped, so it’s easy to identify what it is and how it works – anyone can use it.
  • Pivot technology allows for maximum efficiency – the solar panel can pivot toward the sun to increase insolation rates.
  •  The most affordable solar light of its kind
  • Quality design and construction
  • The best commercially available solar panels
  • High-temperature battery works efficiently in all climates

About Worldwide Kerosene Use

  • A quarter of humanity still obtains illumination via fuel-based lighting, usually Kerosene or “Kero”.
  • Usage is expected to shrink only slightly by 2030 (from 1.6 billion in 2006 to 1.3 billion in 2030), and is on the rise in Sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Fuel lighting is widespread in well over 100 countries.
  • Typical kerosene users burn their lamps for 1.5 hours a night
  • The Nokero N100 lasts about 2 hours a night on one day’s charge.
  • The Nokero N200 lasts 6-plus hours a night on one day’s charge.

  • The average user spends 5% of their income on lighting fuel.
  • Off-grid lighting users spend $40 billion per year (about 20% of all global lighting expenditures) yet receive only 0.1% of total lighting services.
  • Nokero pays for itself within weeks or months (depending on region) when replacing a kerosene lamp.
  • Recent market research has shown these users’ willingness to pay $6-$15 for solar LED products.
  • Better light creates improved study conditions, leading to a better overall economy for the host nation. (One report stated that study time of students rose from 1.47 hours to 2.71 hours per day, with a positive effect on school performance, when using LED lighting rather than fuel lamp lighting).
  • Off-grid businesses rank “improved lighting” highest among a set of improvements desired for their premises.
  • Those who buy a product take more care of it than those who are given a product.
  • Traditional solar home systems cost $300 or more and require installation.
  • Typical “hurricane” lanterns cost about $5US in most regions.
  • Battery-powered LED flashlights are available in some areas for about $5, but 87% of users had problems within 6 months.

  • Inhalation of fumes from fuel lamps is equivalent to smoking 40 cigarettes a day.
  • Exposure to single-wick lamps exposes user to 10 times more particulate matter (PM) than ambient health guidelines.
  • More than 1 million people per year die in fires started by fuel-lamps and lighting materials.
  • Indoor air pollution is responsible for the death of 1.6 million people every year—that’s one death every 20 seconds.
  • Long-term inhalation of hydrocarbons, including kerosene fumes, results in central nervous system damage, including loss of cognitive functions, gait disturbances, and loss of coordination.
  • Other health risks include burns, complications from fires or explosions, child poisoning because of inadvertent consumption, exposure to unburned fuel, and compromised ‘visual health’ because of sub-standard luminance levels.

  • 1.3 million Barrels of oil per day consumed by fuel lighting.
  • 190 million tons of carbon dioxide released into atmosphere.
  • This is the equivalent of 30m cars.
  • One Nokero bulb can save 0.77 tons of CO2 during its lifetime.
  • Other fuels:
  • Kerosene is not the only fuel used for light.
  • More than 7% of households in Tanzania burn wood for light.
  •  20% of homes in Ethiopia burn biofuels (non-kerosene) for light.

Kerosene facts and information are sourced from The Lumina Project

Nokero N200 is the latest from Nokero and is a simple easy to use solution for most lighting issues at home or while camping.

Some interesting facts:

In most countries, the Nokero N200 pays for itself in 15 days to 2 months by eliminating the need for expensive candles or kerosene.

The Nokero N200 also makes an ideal camping light, or a portable RV light, emergency light, or marine light.

It brings 6 hours of light per night on “low” and 2.5 hours of light per night on “high”,* but it can be charged for multiple days in a row to extend its lighting time.

The battery will last for 1.5 years, and can be replaced to keep the bulb lasting for years.

Energy production and distribution has been a costly and polluting exercise world over. We all await a day when renewable energy can be produced in a cost effective way so that the nights will be lit world over.  Nokero N200 is a step in the right way for more details and to buy check out  Nokero N200

Ciralight’s Suntracker: Green Commercial Daylighting!

Columbus Zoo and Aquarium has a working sustainability program in place and which keeps adding new green products to lessen its impact on the environment. In one of the updates we receive at the zoo about what was being done to lessen its Carbon foot print, a green product caught my eye – Ciralight’s Suntracker daylighting system – The speaker introduced it as “Skylights on Steroids!”

The zoo has installed Suntracker systems in the warehouse and the before and after pictures were stunning! Check them out below:

I found it very interesting especially the difference in the lighting, and the positive impact it would make on the environment. Once I got home it was one of the first things I looked up on the web.

What is Suntracker?

Ciralight Global, Inc. headquartered in Irvine, California, aims at bringing natural solar day-lighting indoors using their patented “Intelligent skylight” concept that utilizes a GPS unit that tracks the sun and a lens and mirror design that tracks, captures and magnifies the natural light produced from the sun at a level of intensity and clarity that makes electric lighting unnecessary during daylight hours. The result is a FREE green natural light source during daylight hours, which will lower utility bills, save energy, improve customer and employee satisfaction and enhanced performance in schools, factories and businesses that use the system.

All large scale stores like Sams Club, Home Depot etc School Gyms, Indoor stadiums etc. any building that needs to have lights on throughout the day can benefit from the Suntracker. The Suntracker like the name suggests tracks and uses the Free source of energy “the Sun” – and the light sensors help to turn your electrical powered lights off during daytime hours allowing you to conserve energy, save money and meet today’s energy efficiency standards. All buildings receive some amount of daylight, however, the term ‘daylit’ refers to buildings specifically designed or retrofitted to efficiently capture and distribute daylight as their primary lighting source. Up until now, that has been a very passive technique. Today, Ciralight has the innovative technology to bring daylight into a building in the most efficient and cost effective manner possible.

How does it work?

The Suntracker has a state-of-the-art solar powered GPS rotation control system to track the sun with a single mirror that effectively reflects sunlight into the building. The light passes through a thermal barrier, through a light well and a bottom light diffuser to effectively spread the light throughout the building.

The SunTracker tracks the sun from an hour after sunrise to an hour before sunset allowing the end user to turn the lights OFF during daylight hours.

Unlike the standard skylights the Suntracker Daylighting system keeps the light even throughout the day by tracking the sun. Compared to electric lighting, it produces illumination equivalent to 800 watts of fluorescent lighting, or more than a 1,000 watt metal halide lamp. Since it does not draw any line voltage, electricity costs for lighting drop to zero during the average of 10.5 hours a day that it reflects light indoors.

The combination of lumen performance, low operating cost, long life cycle and much lower heat generation is what makes the system so energy and maintenance efficient. The system is warranted for 10 years.

I am one of those who keeps up with the sun and grey skies make me dreary, so do dark rooms; love to keep windows open and the blinds pulled up, to let the sun in. Remember how there is always a tug of war for that corner cabin with windows! Scientific evidence shows that people feel, work and learn better with daylight than with electric lighting.

The zoo website reports that the environmental impact of the warehouse skylight installation is as follows:

The environmental impacts of this one project are:

  • Annual Carbon Emissions Reduction: 220,605 Lbs.
  • Annual Sulfur Dioxide (SO2) Emissions Reduction: 866 Lbs.
  • Annual Nitrogen Oxide (NO,NO2) Reduction: 425 Lbs.
  • Coal Burning Avoided: 47 Tons
  • Atmospheric Mercury Contamination Avoided: 2,227 Mg
  • Equivalent Acres of Forest Added: 27 Acres
  • Equivalent Number of Cars Removed From the Road: 19 Cars

The essence is that Ciralight Virtually eliminates the need for electric lighting during the daylight hours. Daylighting  reduces pollution and improves human output. Ciralight’s SunTracker high performance daylighting system produces up to ten times more light than a passive skylight and distributes light more evenly and over a wider area. Imagine what an impact it can make if a majority of the large store chains changed their lighting to Suntrack Daylighting systems! Green is the way to live.

SoladeyJ3X: The Solar Toothbrush

The future of Oral hygiene could be Solar! Imagine not having to squeeze out the last bit of toothpaste from the tube! Worrying about your spouse not closing it properly… Not having to write a note to pick up the right brand (with the wide variety out there finding the right paste is almost an adventure in itself J University of Saskatchewan Dentistry professor Emeritus Dr. Kunio Kumiyama and his colleague Dr. Gerry Uswak were recruiting 120 teens willing to try out the solar powered toothbrush Soladey-J3X in 2007. The Japanese manufacturer The Shiken Company is paying the researchers to investigate whether the brush, which causes a chemical reaction in the mouth works better on plaque than a conventional brush and toothpaste combo.

Dr. Kumiyama described his first prototype 15 years back in the Journal of Clinical Periodontology. It contained a titanium dioxide rod in the head of the brush just beneath the nylon bristles. When light shined on the wet rod it would release electrons which reacted with the acid in the mouth which helped breakdown the plaque without using toothpaste.

Now the latest edition the Soladey-J3X according to Dr. Kumiyama packs double the chemical punch when compared to the earlier version. Protruding from the base of the brush is a solar panel, which transmits electrons to the top of the toothbrush through a lead wire. For the brush to work one needs ambient light, i.e. light enough for a solar powered calculator to work.

How Does it Work?

The brush holder head lasts for a long time, while the head will need replacement when the bristles fray. The brush heads are priced at around 250 yen (3$) in Japan.

Last month, the researchers presented their research at the FDI Annual World Dental Conference in Dubai, where their poster won first prize out of 170 entries.

Check out the video about the toothbrush:

I am waiting for it to make its appearance in our local stores, would definitely check it out. It has been launched in Canada as Soladey Eco and can be found here

Green Water Conservation Products

“Water is precious” how many ever times we hear that, it is kind of hard to register, as right now around most of us there is really no problems with water availability. The US EPA in 2008 said a survey had found that 36 states were anticipating Local, regional or statewide water shortage by 2013.

At the start of the 21st century unclean water is the second biggest killer of children world over – UNDP human development report 2006

Below are some water saving products we can integrate into our daily lives, which will lower the water bill for sure and save water! Today I am focusing specifically on the Garden.

According to reports some households use up to 50% of their water for gardening or out door purposes. Summer is the time when the sprinklers work over time to keep the grass green. Watch out for the water that ends up on the side walk and the roads, adjust the positioning to make maximum utilization of water.

1. Hydretain Root Zone Moisture Manager a Water Magnet for all you plants and lawn.

This is one amazing product, it is green i.e. biodegradable and helps conserve water! Hydretain when added to soil helps soil hold on to the evaporating water vapor there by extending the time between watering. The Manufacturers say one can double or even triple the number of days between required watering and enjoy the benefits of proper water management. Hydretain is a revolutionary new product designed to reduce watering requirements of plants and turf. Its patented blend of liquid humectant and hygroscopic compounds attract free water molecules from the air withing the soil and efficiently transfers them to the roots of the plants. The simple yet unique mechanism results in healthy vigorous drought resistant turf, trees, shrubs, ornamental plants and agriculture.

It is a liquid blend which is used like any spray on fertilizer one uses attached to the hose, it comes fitted with a hose-end applicator.

Hydretain helps to :

  • Minimize Drought stress (they have examples of plants in 100 degree temp settings!)
  • Control or eliminate dry spots (used in golf courses and lawns)
  • Enhance nutrient efficiency
  • Optimize Pesticide Efficiency
  • Improve Seed Germination
  • Increase transplant survival
  • Reduce water expenses
  • Maximize crop yields

You can buy Hydretain Here it comes in 1quart, 2quart etc… price starts at 24.95 for a 1 quart bottle. 1quart as per the manufacturer will cover 2500 – 5000 square feet of lawn. One application lasts for up to 3 months. I like it because it works and it is GREEN!!

2. JARDENIER Plant watering system

The manufacturer says you can reduce water usage by up to 80% and maintenance costs by 50% or more with Jardinier’s wide range of waterproof decorative containers, planter boxes and roof top gardens, used in conjunction with their patented Sub-Irrigation Systems.

I found the sub-irrigation planters particularly of interest for Indoor plants. Plants grown in Jardinier Containers are generally healthier, which means the expense of replacement and the labor involved can be greatly reduced. A study by Dr. Cheryl Wilen of the University of California has shown that plants grown in Jardinier Containers have a more developed root system than plants which are top watered. Sub irrigation also eliminated the harmful build up of salts due to top watering. Since Jardinier Containers are a closed system, fertilizers and pesticides can be confined within the containers. Jardinier Containers also are designed to provide each plant with maximum growing space, which means you get more plant for each container size, which means you spend less time transplanting.

Finally, Jardinier Containers can hold enough water to last at least 2 to 3 weeks, which means you can be on vacation without worrying about finding a dead or weak plant on arrival!! Saving water, plants and money–not bad, and you’ll also be making the world a better place.

The Diagram above shows how the pot works.

Pricing between 5$ for the smallest pot to 50$ to the largest one.

3. Using sprayers and misters which have aerators is an option to reduce water consumption.

Add to these the use of green fertilizers and pesticides like neem oil, a natural foliar spray that controls pest insects and diseases. Compost tea, used as a spray, controls rose diseases; as a drench, it suppresses diseases in the lawn and flower beds. Pick plants that are native – drought and disease resistant as they are “Native”! Pick out perennials they do make a come back every year and some even reseed them selves!
Check out this Video on making your own compost, I found it very useful:

You will have a Green backyard lawn et al with a lesser  burden economically and environmentally.
